What a branded wallet loyalty card is and who it suits
A branded wallet loyalty card is a digital loyalty card, with your logo, colors and reward rules, that customers save to Apple Wallet or Google Wallet on their phone. It replaces the paper stamp card: the customer shows it at the till, staff scan it, and the stamps or points update on the card straight away.
It suits small businesses that want a loyalty program without building an app or printing cards: cafés, bakeries, restaurants, salons, barbers, gyms and independent shops. Customers don't download anything. They scan a QR code, fill in a short form and tap "Add to Apple Wallet" or "Add to Google Wallet." If you're still weighing this against a branded app, our comparison of digital loyalty cards and loyalty apps covers the tradeoffs.
This guide walks through creating the card, branding it, serving iPhone and Android customers from one program, and what to check once it's live.
How to create a pass for Apple Wallet and Google Wallet
With a loyalty platform, creating a wallet card is a design job, not a technical project. Here's how it works in Loyaltify; most wallet-card platforms follow similar steps.
- Choose a card type. Pick the format that matches your reward. Loyaltify offers seven: Digital Stamp Card, Cashback Point Card, Pre-Paid Balance Card, Coupon Card, Membership Card, Money Cashback Card and Discount Card. Most cafés and salons start with a stamp card.
- Set the reward rule. For example: one stamp per visit, and a free coffee after nine stamps.
- Brand the front of the card. Upload your logo, choose your colors and write the reward line customers will see.
- Fill in the back of the card. Add your terms, opening hours, website and social links. Customers find these under "Card Details" in their wallet.
- Preview it on both phones. Add the card to an iPhone and an Android phone and check that it looks right on each.
- Share the signup QR code. Print it for the counter, the till or the tables, or send the signup link by email or text. Customers fill in the form and the card goes straight into their wallet.
- Start scanning. Your team scans customers' cards with the Loyaltify Store app on a phone or tablet. If a customer forgets their phone, staff can find them by name or customer ID.
Most businesses finish all seven steps in one sitting.
Building passes yourself, without a platform, is a developer project. On the Apple side you need an Apple Developer account and a pass-signing certificate (Apple's Wallet developer guide). On the Google side you need a Google Wallet issuer account and API integration (Google's loyalty card docs). On top of that you have to host the passes and push updates to them. It only makes sense if you have your own developers and very specific needs.
How one pass can work across iPhone and Android
You don't need two loyalty programs for two kinds of phone. Apple Wallet serves iPhone users and Google Wallet serves Android users, but the program behind the card (the rules, rewards and customer list) is the same.
In practice, every customer scans the same QR code and fills in the same form. Then they tap the button for their own wallet: "Add to Apple Wallet" on an iPhone, "Add to Google Wallet" on Android. At the till, staff scan both kinds of card with the same app, and the balance updates in one place.
For you, that means one program to run, one set of rewards and one customer list. For your customers, it means a card that works on the phone they already have.
Two things to keep in mind:
- Google Wallet isn't available in every country. In Turkey, for example, customers can't add cards to it. If many of your customers are in such a country, check this before launch.
- One card, one device. Adding the same card to a second phone can stop it from updating, so ask customers to keep it on one phone.
Branding options that make the pass feel like your business
A wallet card has a small screen to work with, so every element has to earn its place. Customers open their wallet at the counter with a queue behind them, and they should recognize your card by its color and logo in under a second.
| Where | What goes there |
|---|---|
| Front | Logo, business name, background and text colors, the reward line ("Buy 9, get the 10th free"), the current stamps or points, and the QR code staff scan |
| Back (Card Details) | Terms and conditions, opening hours, website and social links, custom fields, and a referral link if you run a referral program |
A few rules that help:
- Keep the front minimal. Logo, balance and code. Everything else goes on the back.
- Pick strong contrast. Light text on a dark background (or the reverse) stays readable in a dim café and on small screens.
- Write the reward in plain words. "Free coffee after 9 stamps" beats "Earn rewards with every visit."
- Use one design per offer. If you run several programs, such as a coffee card and a lunch card, give each its own design so customers can tell them apart. Loyaltify's Starter plan includes one card design, Growth up to four and Advanced up to ten.
What to check before and after launch
Before launch:
- Save the card on an iPhone and on an Android phone.
- Check that the logo, colors and reward text display correctly on both.
- Scan the card at the till with the device your staff will actually use.
- Test the signup form in the phone's own browser. Opened from inside another app, such as a messaging app, the card can download as a file instead of opening in the wallet.
After launch:
- Updates happen automatically. When a customer earns or redeems, the card updates on their phone. You don't need to reissue anything.
- Use lock-screen notifications. Messages to customers arrive as wallet notifications on the lock screen, not as emails. Marketing messages only go to customers who ticked the consent box on your form. If you add your branch addresses, the card can also appear on the lock screen when a customer is within about 150 meters.
- Changing customer details. Customers can't edit their own details yet, but your staff can, and the change reaches the card within a day or two.

FAQ: setup, compatibility, and updates
What do I need to create a branded loyalty card?
Your logo, your brand colors, a reward rule and the text for the back of the card. With a platform like Loyaltify you set this up yourself without any code, and staff scan cards with a phone or tablet.
Does one loyalty card work on both iPhone and Android?
Yes. Customers sign up through the same QR code or link, iPhone users save the card to Apple Wallet and Android users to Google Wallet, and both run on the same program and the same rewards.
Do customers need an app or a paper card?
No. The card lives in Apple Wallet or Google Wallet, which are already on their phones. Each customer has one card, and it updates automatically when they earn or redeem.
What if a customer didn't save the card or got a new phone?
If they fill in the signup form again with the same email, they're sent their existing card by email with the same balance, not a new one. Staff can also resend it from the customer's profile. Cards usually move to a new phone automatically.
How do I update the card after launch?
Balances update on their own with every scan. For offers and news, send a notification that appears on the customer's lock screen.
